You’re in a Marketplace, and You Aren’t the Only Product on the Shelf!

I recently read a post by Eliav Alaluf about personal branding, and he hit on a critical point: Managers aren’t robots; they’re human beings looking for peace of mind. But from the perspective of YourMarket.Fit, I want to take this a step further. Ultimately, you are managing the most important product of your career: Yourself.

The problem is that most talented people in tech - developers, QA engineers, product managers - treat their careers like a "basement startup." They build an incredible product but completely forget to ship it to the market.

Let’s talk numbers (because reality isn’t a Disney movie): For every desirable position today, hundreds of resumes are submitted. After the initial screening, only 4-6 candidates make it to the hiring manager. That means you have a 1%–3% chance of even getting a meeting.

Do you really want to bet on those statistics against someone who isn't afraid to market themselves? Do you think their resume is less impressive than yours? Do you think they didn’t use AI to optimize for the ATS?

This is what it looks like when you view yourself as a product in a Marketplace:

  • Your CV is the Spec: It lists your features. It’s dry, technical, and necessary.

  • Your LinkedIn is your Pitch Deck: It’s the one-pager meant to make a manager say, "I need to meet this person." If your deck is empty or boring, no "investor" (manager) will take the meeting.

  • Online Engagement is your Social Proof: When you write, comment, or share insights, you aren’t "bragging." You are creating social validation for your value. It’s the difference between a product with zero reviews and one that everyone is talking about.

But here is the critical part in the age of AI: In a world where tech tools change overnight and replace entire functions, you must be ready to Pivot.

The persona that served you as a "great Frontend Developer" two years ago might be irrelevant today. Just like Kodak couldn't keep saying "We are the best at film" when the world moved to digital, you cannot get stuck on an old brand.

Personal branding in 2026 is an ongoing, adaptive process. It means being able to "kill" your old persona if it no longer fits what the market needs, and building a new one - fast. Those who aren’t agile, who don't build a persona that can evolve and demonstrate value in new domains, will simply be left behind.

Lately, many people affected by layoffs have reached out to me. When we talk about branding, they say, "It’s just not me." But here’s the truth: Recruiters aren't just looking at where you worked (they saw that in the CV). They are looking for the Persona.

They aren't looking for history. They want to see how connected you are to the industry, what your values are, and what "vibe" you bring beyond the code or the spreadsheets. They want an individual who lives the industry, understands where the wind is blowing, and brings the value AI can't yet provide: personality, context, and mental flexibility.

Word-of-mouth is great, but it’s not scalable and it takes forever. In a competitive market where everyone is using every tool possible to stand out, sitting quietly and waiting to be discovered isn't modesty - it’s a strategic error.

Self-marketing isn't "noise." It’s how you ensure your Market Fit remains valid even as the market shifts.

It’s time to find your Personal-Market Fit.
