“Don’t Worship the Process – Focus on the Essence” – Steve Jobs on Innovation and the Role of Product Management

Steve Jobs - Process vs Content

In a fascinating video, Steve Jobs talks about the mistake IBM made – and that Apple almost made – by focusing on processes instead of content and value.

His words are clear and powerful:

“You don’t win by having the best process. You win by creating a great product that delivers real value to users.”

This idea reminded me of what happened to Kodak. They were masters of manufacturing, marketing, and distributing film. In fact, they even invented the digital camera! But what happened? They failed because they focused on refining their processes rather than understanding the essence: the future was digital, not film.

This is precisely where product managers need to shine.

Our job isn’t to perfect the process – it’s to understand the market, identify the next big shift, and lead the organization to create innovative value for customers.

🔑 So how does this apply to our work?

1️⃣ Deep understanding of the problem – Know what truly matters to your users.

2️⃣ Focus on value, not technique – Drive innovation rooted in real needs, not habits and processes.

3️⃣ Look ahead – Spot upcoming opportunities and don’t fear breaking existing patterns.

If we as product managers focus only on the process, we risk missing the essence – just like Kodak did.

I highly recommend watching the full video:
